Top operate the Rope Lock:
There is no good way to describe the rope lock using pictures so we will describe this in the following steps;
1. Loop the rope around the animals leg using the hook provided.
2. You must lift the weight of the animals leg with one hand while pulling down on the rope tail with your other hand.
3. You must let go of the weight or animal leg before letting go of the tail for the rope to engage the knurled lock pin inside the head which will lock the rope.
4. To lower the leg or drop the weight, you must lift up on the weight and give the rope tail a tug to free up the knurled lock pin in the head. Then you must let go of the rope tail before dropping the weight and the rope tail will freely slide thru the head while you lower the weight or animal leg.
Helpful Tips:
You can set the tripod up low with the rope looped around the animals leg, get the rope to lock and then stand the legs of the tripod up which will in turn lift the animals leg with leverage. You can lower or reposition the animals leg by using the tripod legs this way too, only use caution not to bend the tripod legs while positioning them to the terrain.
Once the animals leg is cut free from the carcass, you can use the hook and head as a pulley system by running the rope tail thru one part of the hook again and then run the rope tail back up thru one of the open hole slots in the head. This will gain considerable leverage if you have trouble lifting a heavy animal quarter higher once free from the carcass. Slide all the keepers together before running the rope back thru the open hole slot on the head, once the animals leg is at the desired height, hitch the rope around a screw standoff to lock it.
Under normal conditions the rope lock will hold considerable amounts of weight. But if your rope has been used a lot and has gotten animal fat into it to where you may notice on rare occasion that it may want to slide back thru the lock mechanism in the head, if this ever happens you can simply hitch the rope around one of the screw standoffs on top of the head to secure the rope tail. This can also be an additional safety measure to ensure the rope will not ever slip in the head, though it is not always necessary.
